Where are my 90s-era homeschool kids? If I say “Guard your heart” what do you think of? Well, other than the old Steve Green song, you probably think about the concept of guarding your heart in a romantic sense.
Of course, guarding your heart in a romantic relationship is important. There’s no denying that, but I think it’s also important to acknowledge that guarding your heart goes beyond romance. We should guard our hearts in every relationship, not just the ones that give us butterflies.
But why? Why is it so important to protect your heart? Aren’t we supposed to love others without reserve? Isn’t it wrong to place boundaries on our love because we’re scared of being hurt?
Oh my friends, religious sensibility hasn’t done us any favors in this arena, has it?
