Why does knowing God’s attributes matter?
July 6-12, 2025 | Always Peachy Devotionals | Who Is God? Week 2
What does it matter if God knows everything?
He’s God. He’s so far above us, so far beyond anything remotely human, what difference does it make in our everyday lives? God exists on another plane, doesn’t He? The same thing is true if He is everywhere at the same time or if He has all power. What difference does it actually make to the average person just trying to make it through life?
Well, if God were distant and apathetic and disconnected, I suppose it wouldn’t matter at all. God would do His God things, and He wouldn’t bother with us. We’re like bugs to Him. Less than bugs, actually.
But here’s the miracle: God isn’t distant. He isn’t disconnected. He isn’t standing far off ignoring the world and the people He made with His own hands. He is actively invested in every moment, every detail of our lives.
So when we learn that He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and all present, that means something. When we realize that He won’t ever leave and won’t ever fail, that tells us something about Him. But more than that it helps us realize how we should relate to God first and foremost.
Too often we take a perspective on God that is far too casual. Yes, God wants a relationship with Him, but we shouldn’t ever forget that this is God we’re talking about. The God who made the universe out of nothing. The God who exists outside of Time itself.
So, why is it important that we recognize God’s attributes? What difference should it make in our everyday lives and in our perspective on who He is? Well, that’s what we’re talking about this week.
Monday - We understand that we can’t understand Him (Romans 11:33)
Tuesday - We recognize that He is big enough (2 Corinthians 9:8)
Wednesday - We acknowledge that He is worthy (Psalm 96:4-9)
Thursday - We realize that without Him we can do nothing (John 15:5)
Friday - We accept that He is Sovereign (Daniel 4:35)
Being human can be a challenge. In each of us is an enduring need to be independent, to be separate, to be on our own so that we can go our own way. We yearn for freedom from accountability and authority, but because we can’t be sufficient on our own, we can’t exist apart from God.
It’s so vitally important that we have the right perspective on who God is and how we should relate to Him. Yes, He desires a close personal relationship with each and every one of us, but we should never forget who He is. That’s what His attributes should teach us about Him.
God longs for us to know Him personally. He has always wanted us to be in relationship with Him. That was His purpose for Israel, to show the world what a relationship with God was supposed to look like. So that’s the verse we will be memorizing this week, Isaiah 43:10.
God wants the world to know Him, and knowing Him starts first with seeing Him as He is and understanding that though He loves us with an everlasting love, He isn’t like us. He isn’t like anyone. There is no one like Him, and there never will be.
Praying for all of you this week!
Amy
