Why do we let fear control us?
September 5 - September 9, 2022 | Always Peachy Devotionals | Fear Week 1
Welcome to September!
Yes, it’s been September for a little while, but this is the first full week. How’s your weather? Is it fallish yet? I’m so ready for fall, I can hardly stand it.
In Kansas, September is the month when all the sunflowers burst out. Our neighbors across from the farm have a whole field full of them, so I’m hoping to get some photos. I’ll share when I get them!
I hope our study about Expectations last month was meaningful to you. I know it’s something I’ve always struggled with—living with expectation. We’re called to live expectant lives, but that’s hard to do when you can’t always count on life being stable!
With so much uncertainty in life, I couldn’t avoid what God was telling me to study for the month of September. I didn’t want to. It’s a touchy subject for me, mostly because I still struggle with it so much. But that’s okay. We’ll struggle through it together.
For the month of September, we’re going to talk about Fear. And for our first week, we’re going to really focus in on WHY we let fear control us.
September 5 - We don’t like pain
September 6 - We don’t understand what God’s doing
September 7 - We’ve been hurt too many times
September 8 - We forget who God is
September 9 - We don’t trust God enough to obey
Fear is something all of us have to face and struggle through. There’s a reason God puts so much focus on “Fear not!” in the Scriptures. Together, we’ll find what God has to tell us about our fears and why it’s so important that we don’t let them control our actions and our choices.
That concept informed the verse I chose for our memory verse this month, Romans 8:15.
When we came to God, He didn’t give us a spirit that makes us afraid of Him. The Holy Spirit’s job isn’t to crush us and control us and make us live in terror of God. No! The Holy Spirit exists to connect us to God, to help us live in communion and community with Him.
Reverence, yes. Terror, never. God wants us to call Him “Abba.” That means, “Daddy,” y’all. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t hear any fear-inducing in a title like that. God’s desire isn’t for us to be afraid of Him. We’re not supposed to live in fear. Fear should have nothing to do with how we live our lives, and this month, that’s what we’re going to talk about.
Sound like a plan? Good. I sure appreciate you guys, and I’m praying for each and every one of you.
