When was the last time you experienced fear?
We all feel afraid at some point in our lives. Fear isn’t something that only happens to cowards. Actually, fear happens to the brave more than it does to the scaredy-cats. If you experience a lot of fear, it’s likely you’re busy doing important things.
Fear is normal. It’s human. As I was praying about what topic to discuss this month, Fear just seemed like the best choice, considering the climate of the world at the moment and other current events. I realized, though, that I wrote about Fear in September 2022 as well. This will be the first time I’ve repeated at topic since I launched this platform in December 2021.
Honestly? If I were going to repeat a topic, this is one I would pick, because it’s something I struggle with in a big way. Fear surrounds all of us, every moment of our lives, and we all face the choice of how to respond to it.
So for the month of October, we’re going to get honest about Fear. If we can’t be honest about our fears, we can’t face them. But before we can even begin to name our fears, it’s important to understand where fear comes from.
Why do we experience fear? Is it something that just happens, or can we identify the factors that spark it? That’s where we’re going to start this week, why we feel fear.
Monday - Feeling alone (Isaiah 41:10)
Tuesday - Not having control or power (Daniel 4:35)
Wednesday - Not having understanding (Romans 11:33-35)
Thursday - Not having light or vision (Psalm 27:1)
Friday - Experiencing pain and hurt (Job 13:15-16)
I’m eager to dive into this more deeply and in a way that helps us better manage and navigate negative emotions like fear. I think it’s easy to forget sometimes that the Bible is full of guidance and wisdom in how to manage our emotions. Most of the time, it seems we see Scripture as a list of things to do or not do, and when we think of the Bible that way, it can feel cold and logical and distant. But that’s not the case at all.
God has emotions too, and He isn’t afraid to talk about them all throughout Scripture. The Bible is loaded with instruction on how to handle the emotions when they come—even negative emotions like fear. And for our memory verse this week, I felt led to Psalm 9:10.
Knowing who God is really helps when we encounter fear in our lives. Knowing God personally means you can trust His character. He has made so many promises to us, and He has kept all of them. Not a single one of His promises has ever failed, and they aren’t going to start.
In the moments when you feel afraid, start looking for God. He’s there. He’s with you. There’s no place so far away that He can’t reach you. There’s no place so dark that His light can’t illuminate your life. He won’t ever abandon His kids, so when you’re afraid, call out to Him. He’ll be there.
Love you guys. Praying for you this week. Eager to learn how to manage fear together.
