What exactly is Sabbath Rest?
March 6 - March 10, 2023 | Always Peachy Devotionals | Rest Week 1
Happy March, everyone!
Whew, is anybody else ready for spring? I love cold weather, but I’m ready for a break from the gray and dreary for sure. And March also has one of my favorite holidays—St. Patrick’s Day (which I love not because of the traditional alcohol content but because I’m Irish and it’s a requirement of my genetics to celebrate).
As the last clinging vestiges of winter start to slowly dissipate, it’s refreshing to see life begin again. Traditionally winter is the season where a lot of things slow down (although, I’m not sure that’s the case anymore, considering I’ve been busier than ever this winter!). But spring is definitely when life starts to get wild again.
So as we move into another season of life and renewal, something I felt the Lord challenging me to do is to study what He has to say about rest. I’m terrible at it. It’s a huge struggle for me to make space to rest. I usually overload my schedule with responsibilities and appointments, and I can maintain that hectic pace for a while—just not indefinitely. Inevitably, I crash.
Ideally, I’d love to be able to have a realistic schedule, one that allows me to do the things God has called me to do AND make time to rest as well. That’s not a pipe dream. It IS possible. In fact, it’s more than possible. It’s how we were designed to live!
Rest needs to be part of our lives as Jesus followers, but what does that mean? Does that mean we have to sit in the dark and do absolutely nothing but stare at a wall every Sunday? Does that mean we should even worship on Sunday? Should we be worshiping on Saturday instead?
Through the month of March, we are going to be studying Sabbath rest. We’re going to talk about what it is, why it matters to God, why it should matter to us, and how we can make space in our lives to DO it instead of just dreaming about it.
So to start us off, this coming week we’re going to begin at the beginning (it’s a very good place to start), and we’re asking God and searching the Scriptures to understand what Sabbath rest actually is.
March 6 - Wait… did God need a breather?
March 7 - The Sabbath is an example
March 8 - The Sabbath is a symbol
March 9 - The Sabbath is liberating
March 10 - The Sabbath is to help us
And since we’re studying the basics, we’d better start at the other beginning: The Literal One. Our memory verse for this week is Genesis 2:3.
God made everything (EVERYTHING) in six days. And then, on the seventh day, He stopped. He didn’t create anything else. He didn’t make anything else. And that’s what we are going to talk about this week. Lord willing, we’ll get some clarity on how we should see the Sabbath and what it looks like to obey it and accept the rest God offers us in Him.
I can’t wait, guys. Love and appreciate all of you!
Amy
