Happy Fourth of July!
I hope you are spending time with your loved ones this Independence Day. Now more than ever it’s important to remember why this day matters, to acknowledge the sacrifices that have come with the privilege of being an American citizen.
Because make no mistake, it is a privilege. And it’s one I never want to take for granted.
After a tough month on idolatry, we are moving on to a topic that is near and dear to my heart. Value. When I was trying to decide how to summarize this month’s theme, I nearly called it Self-Worth. Because that’s what’s all over our culture now. Our self-worth.
Our self-worth and our value are the same thing, right? Sorry to burst your bubble, my friends. They’re not.
According to the Scripture, my self has no worth. I know that sounds harsh, but it’s the truth. On my own, I am worthy of nothing. In my own strength and power, I am worthy of condemnation and darkness.
But my self no longer belongs to me. God determined what I was worth to Him when He sent His Son to die for me, to purchase my soul with the price of Jesus’ life. Because of that, my worth is based on Jesus. Not on my self.
The truth about value is that it shifts from object to object, person to person. It’s subjective. One man’s treasure is another man’s trash. That’s why we need to find our value, our worth, in something that isn’t subjective—in Someone who never changes.
So this month, we’re going to talk about Value, and we’re going focus on what that means for our worth to God. First, though, we need to start by understanding what God values.
July 4 - We can know what God values
July 5 - God values His creation
July 6 - God doesn’t reward us with salvation
July 7 - God’s values aren’t ours
July 8 - God values obedience
When I was thinking about a memory verse, the first one that came to mind for me was 1 Corinthians 7:23.
When we’re down in the dumps about something we can or can’t do, or something someone said about us that hurt us, do we ever think about the price of our souls? Do we ever focus on what our freedom cost Jesus? The next time you’re tempted to give in to what the world wants you to do, remember the price God paid for your soul.
I’m so excited to dig into this idea of value and worth in God alone. So often, we define ourselves by our performance, or we see ourselves as worthy only because of what we can do. But the truth is, our value to God goes beyond any action we take or choice we make. And this month we’re going to find out why.
Blessings, friends!
Amy
