A MacGuffin is basically an object that the hero or villain in a story believes will solve all their problems. The Maltese Falcon. The Holy Grail. The One Ring. The Infinity Gauntlet. It can be the crown jewels in a heist story or a messiah figure like Neo in the Matrix movies.
It’s the One Thing that will make the world make sense.
