Does God care about your health?
Not a trick question. Do you believe that God actually cares whether you take care of yourself or not?
When we talk about developing God-honoring habits and setting God-honoring priorities, I’m not sure we focus on our physical health. Physical, mental, and emotional health all seem to come secondary to spiritual health. And that’s not wrong. That's not even bad.
We are spiritual beings who will live forever (in one eternal location or another), so making your spiritual life a priority is as it should be. But what makes us think that our physical, mental, and emotional health are disconnected from our spiritual health?
People like to compartmentalize. It’s a natural response to complex life issues. Frankly, I work best in a compartmentalized arrangement because my brain has so many open tabs all the time I can’t keep them straight otherwise.
But God didn’t design us to live life in pieces. He made us to live whole. Your physical health is directly related to your ability to process emotions and manage your thoughts and—by extension—your spiritual focus.
If our enemy can prevent us from growing spiritually, he will. And he'll do in it whatever way he can. So let's not give him any opportunity to gain ground or influence in our lives. That means not just developing holy habits, but also healthy habits.
And, of course, the Bible has a ton to say about this. So we're going to spend this week talking about how to build habits that care for our health—body, mind, and soul.
Jun 10- Taking care of your body (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
Jun 11 - Taking care of your soul (Matthew 11:28)
Jun 12 - Taking care of your emotions (Proverbs 4:23)
Jun 13 - Taking care of your mind (Philippians 4:6-7)
Jun 14 - Self-care without self-focus – Matthew 15:32
I truly believe that if we can understand God's perspective on self-care, it will revolutionize our spiritual health. Self-care has become a cringey buzzword that divides people. And, sure, there are people who make it all about physical comforts and extravagant living. But what does God think about tending to our needs? Does He expect us to go without the necessities of life like food and water and clothing? Are we all supposed to live in caves and take vows of poverty and eat nothing but locusts?
Of course not.
For a verse to memorize this week, I thought 1 Peter 5:7 sets the tone well for what we’ll be studying.
Isn't that amazing?
God cares about you. He cares that you eat. He cares that you're healthy. He cares that you are able to focus on things that matter to you. And if God cares about those things, shouldn't we?
I’m excited to learn from Jesus how we can take better care of ourselves, no matter what stage of life or situation we are in.
Love you guys!
Amy
