Something to sing about
Even on your darkest day, even in the moment where you are at your lowest, even when you think God has left you, He is still singing.
For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs. (Zephaniah 3:17)
Did you know that God sings?
We don’t talk about the book of Zephaniah as often as we probably should, but I suspect this is the one verse everyone knows from it. God rejoices over us with joyful songs.
Wow.
I like to imagine what God’s singing voice sounds like. I’ve heard some beautiful vocalists, but God obviously would blow them all away. He is the ultimate musician. He designed all of creation to rejoice. Even the planets make music as they orbit. The stars and the rocks sing out to Him.
Have you ever stopped to wonder why creation rejoices? Why do the rocks cry out? Why do the planets sing? Why does all nature and heaven worship?
Have you ever stopped to realize that humans are the only ones proud and deluded enough to ask that question?
Why wouldn’t creation rejoice? Why wouldn’t nature sing? The God of the Universe made them with His own hands, set their existences in motion, and watches over them every day. He delights in His creation. He thinks His creation is good.
It’s not the same thing, but as a writer, when I write something that I know is good, I get excited. I celebrate. I kind of get a bit giddy, if I’m being honest, and I giggle like a maniac. I know when I’ve done something worthy of honor.
How much more is that true with God? And how much more does the work of His hands deserve credit? But, see, humanity doesn’t think like that. Not naturally. We are small-minded and jealous and hungry for power and control. We don’t want to give God glory because we feel it diminishes our own worth.
But does it? Does acknowledging God as our Creator truly make us worth less? I don’t think so. Humanity is the crown of God’s creation. He shaped and formed humans with His own hands and breathed Life into us. We are engineering marvels. We are scientific impossibilities. We are precious in His sight.
Can we just take a quiet moment right now and embrace that?
God made you. He formed you. He knit you together. He created your very soul, strange and unique and quirky and odd.
Even if your whole life is falling apart, you can acknowledge that God made you. You can give credit where credit is due. You can choose to praise Him because if nothing else He has a purpose for your life.
So many times, we get bogged down by the heaviness of life, the brokenness of the world, the disappointments of our failures (or the failures of others). It’s a lot. It’s overwhelming. The sorrow can be so loud sometimes, and we can so easily get stuck in the mire of despair.
But even then, even on your darkest day, even in the moment where you are at your lowest, even when you think God has left you, He is still singing.
That matters to me. That means something. That tells me, He’s still got this. He hasn’t given up on me. He hasn’t lost control, and He’s not worried about the future. If He is still singing, when it feels like everything around us has come apart at the seams, maybe I can be calm. Maybe I feel afraid, but I can choose to let His singing comfort me—because He isn’t.
If God can find something to sing about, maybe we can too. Even it’s Him we’re singing about.
Questions for Reflection
Why is it so difficult to choose to rejoice when life is hard?
Why do you think it matters that all creation worships God?
How would your life be different if you rejoicing in God’s goodness wasn’t optional?
