One of the mission’s trips I went on in high school required us to live out of backpacks and eat military rations for nearly two weeks. What surprised me the most about that trip wasn’t the discomfort or the language struggles.
After 10 days living in a Tarahumara village, we got back to Chihuahua City, and I saw my reflection. There had been no mirrors in that village, of if there were I hadn’t seen them. I had almost forgotten what I looked like.
It was a shock to see my face staring back at me, sunburned with crazy dreadlock hair. For a minute I couldn’t figure out why it threw me, but then I realized that the image in the mirror didn’t look like the image I had of myself.
