How should we be like God?
July 27 - August 2, 2025 | Always Peachy Devotionals | Who Is God? Week 5
You know what they say about imitation, right?
When we see someone we think is cool, it is normal for us to want to imitate them. When we see someone successful, we want to follow in their footsteps and do what they have done in hopes of being successful ourselves. We model our lives after the people we admire and respect.
That’s good, actually. The people who are doing the things we want to do should be on our radar. People who are living the kinds of lives we want to live need to be in front of us so we know how to get to where they are. The problem with patterning our lives after another person is that they will eventually let us down. They will make a decision that will disappoint us, or they will lead others toward destructive behaviors.
It’s not that we shouldn’t have earthly heroes, but it’s always wise to remember that all our earthly heroes are—at the core of their beings—still human.
So what do we do? Who do we follow? Who should we try to be like?
I know, it’s a pretty obvious answer. But I’m not sure it’s as obvious as it should be, since many of us don’t automatically jump to the idea that we need to be imitating God. It’s true that God is so big, so powerful, so much that imitating Him seems impossible. We can’t be perfect, so how can we even try to be like God? And isn’t that what got Satan in trouble?
Well, while we can’t imitate God’s attributes, there are elements of His character that we can incorporate into our everyday lives. And Satan did get kicked out of heaven for trying to be like God, but he was trying to be his own god. He sought to replace God with himself. And that’s not what we are talking about here.
So how can we be like God in the way that pleases Him? What are the ways we can imitate His character so that others will look at us and see Him? That’s what we’re going to talk about this week!
Monday - Be kind (Matthew 10:16)
Tuesday - Live righteously (2 Corinthians 3:9-12)
Wednesday - Stand on what is actually True (Colossians 2:6-8)
Thursday - Make generous choices (1 Timothy 6:17-19)
Friday - Rejoice (Zephaniah 3:17)
This is just a few of the ways we can imitate God’s character. The more time we spend in God’s Word, the better we learn how to identify Him and adjust our behavior to reflect His heart. That’s what truly imitating someone means. It’s not just following in their footsteps or repeating the actions that they do. It’s learning the motivation of their heart and adopting it as your own.
And if there is anyone in our lives that we need to be imitating it’s God, and the reason for that is our memory verse this week, Ephesians 5:1.
We belong to God. We are part of His family. When we accepted Jesus into our hearts and lives, God adopted us and grafted us into His family tree. God isn’t just the perfect role model, He wants us to be like Him. He invites us to know Him personally so that we can share His love with the world around us.
God created humanity because He wanted a big family, and He knew that humanity would fail. We may not understand all the reasons or the whys or the details about everything that has gone down over the last several thousand years. But we know that God loves us because He sent Jesus to save us when He didn’t have to.
God’s desire for a big family hasn’t faded, and He has commissioned us to spread the word about who He is. The best way to do that is to imitate Him. The better we reflect an authentic picture of who God is, the more the world will want to know Him.
And I’m pretty sure that’s the whole point.
Blessings, dear friends!
