How can you live with practical humility?
April 22-26, 2024 | Always Peachy Devotionals | Humility Week 4
Where did you learn how to live?
Adjusting the way we live our lives is a lot easier if we have an example to follow. Making choices in challenging circumstances isn’t as difficult if we’ve had a model to pattern our lives after.
Why do you think YouTube videos have gotten so popular? Content creators have discovered a formula in designing “how to” videos for people who need help. They film a process. They show the steps. And viewers watch, because they want to see how someone else has done something before they try it.
The same is true when it comes to integrating a character quality like humility into our lives. I’ll be the first in line to admit that humility is challenging. I never quite know where the line is between pride and self-esteem. It’s hard for me to know, and that’s a journey I’m still taking.
But one thing I know for sure: Jesus is our model.
Jesus is the One who we are to pattern our lives after. We need to live the way He lived, to speak the way He spoke, and to do the things He did. More than anything, we need to be like Him. We need His motivation, His heart, His attitude.
If you have the Holy Spirit, He’s already working on you, whether you realize it or not. But if you want to make real progress in becoming more like Jesus, you need to study Jesus’ life. Look at His story in Scripture. Spend time with Him. Let God show you what He expects you to do and what He expects your life to look like.
So this week, we’re going to focus on the idea of practical humility. Not just talking about being humble or understanding what humility looks like. But how to live with it. How to live like Jesus.
Apr 22 – Choose Obedience (Philippians 2:6-8)
Apr 23 – Give Mercy (Luke 5:29-32)
Apr 24 – Show Kindness (Mark 10:13-16)
Apr 25 – Be Quiet (Matthew 27:12-14)
Apr 26 – Take the Hit (John 10:18)
Are you cringing? I’m cringing. I struggle with all of these, not in the sense that I disagree with them or think that they aren’t true. I struggle with doing them. I don’t always feel like obeying. I don’t always want to give mercy, especially to the people who don’t deserve it (ironically, they’re the ones who need it most). I certainly don’t always want to be kind, and I do not like holding my tongue. Not when I have something to say.
More than anything, I dislike having to carry the responsibility of someone else’s failure.
But, read the Bible. That’s what Jesus did for us. And if He is our example, then that’s how we need to live too.
One of the most powerful verses in Scripture is Philippians 2:5, and I thought it would be a great memory verse for this week.
Short and sweet and utterly impossible without the Holy Spirit. To have Jesus’ attitude in every situation in life means facing obstacles with faith, cruel selfish people with love, and a broken world with unshakable hope.
You know what having Jesus' attitude also means? It means you rest when you need it. It means you retreat from the noise and chaos of everyday life when you need it. It means you make friends and build close community. It means you celebrate in times of joy and grieve in times of mourning.
Learning to be like Jesus will take the entire length of our human existences. We won’t fully achieve it, but we will get closer one day at a time until God brings us Home.
Don’t be afraid of living with humility. That’s how Jesus lived, so that’s what it means to follow Him.
Hugs!
Amy
