How can you identify your idols?
June 6 - June 10, 2022 | Always Peachy Devotionals | Idols Week 1
Welcome to the first week of June!
Has summer hit your part of the world yet? June is such an interesting month here in Kansas. It’s one of those months where the weather still hasn’t quite figured out what season it’s supposed to be. Sometimes we’ll have wheat harvest happening, and other times we’ll be treading water in historic floods.
At least it’s never boring!
Last week we finished up our series on worship, and this week we are jumping into a new theme. I’m excited about it personally because it’s an area I really struggle with, so I’m praying that it will be a blessing and an encouragement to you as well.
Throughout the month of June, we’re going to be talking about IDOLS.
How can you know if you have idols in your life? Well, I hate to tell you this, my friends, but if you’re a human being you struggle with idolatry. It’s just a fact of who we are. We are constantly in conflict between trusting God and trusting something or someone else.
Some idols are easier to spot than others, though. Maybe you don’t even realize that idolatry has crept into your life. It did for me, and I didn’t know it until the Lord gave me a stern reality check a few weeks ago. So I thought maybe it ought to be something we chat about here.
For the first week, we’re going to go basic. Idols are insidious, let me tell you, and they sneak into our daily lives without us even realizing it half the time. So for this week we’re going to talk about how to recognize if you even have idols in your life (spoiler alert: you do!).
June 6 - You stress about what you can’t control
June 7 - You care more about your image than your actions
June 8 - You value your success above your health
June 9 - You value your possessions more than people
June 10 - You define yourself by what others say about you
This may be a challenging month for all of us, but I pray that the Lord will give me the words to communicate what is helpful and inspiring about this topic.
We’re also going old school with our memory verse for this week. There’s nothing like the classics, right? This week’s memory verse is one of the Ten Commandments, Exodus 20:3.
It’s always nice when God is straightforward. Statements like that leave no room for discussion or negotiation. God should be God in our lives, and anything or anyone else that takes His place is an idol. My prayer is that this month we can all take the time to identify and turn away from the idols we’ve unknowingly embraced.
Praying for you all, friends!
Amy
