He is Our Strong Tower
November 13-17, 2023 | Always Peachy Devotionals | The Names of God Week 3
Where do you run when you need to take shelter?
As someone who has lived in Kansas for 30 years, this is a question I’m familiar with. In nearly every job I’ve ever had, we did tornado drills as frequently as we did fire drills. Living in Kansas without having access to a basement, a crawl space, or a storm shelter isn’t wise, especially in the spring.
But what about needing shelter from something that doesn’t show up on a weather radar? What if you’re facing a terrifying diagnosis? What if you got bad news from a mechanic regarding a vehicle you can’t afford to repair? What if you are at the end of your rope in a relationship and don’t know what to do next?
All of those situations need shelter too, just in a different way. None of us can get through life without needing a safe place to rest every once in a while. Whether you’re talking about emotional struggles, physical struggles, mental struggles—whatever—we all need a place to go where we can take refuge. A place where someone will protect us and provide for us until we are strong enough to face our troubles again.
Throughout the Scripture, God refers to himself as a strong tower. The psalmists call Him that too. The wisest teachers call Him a place of refuge and help where we can go to be safe, to find help, to recharge.
God is our strong tower, and many of His names speak to how we can trust Him as our source of protection and safety. And that’s what we are going to talk about this week.
Nov 13 - El Roi, The God Who Sees Me (Genesis 16:13)
Nov 14 - Jehovah Machsi, My Refuge (Psalm 91:19)
Nov 15 - Jehovah Jireh, My Provider (Genesis 22:13-14)
Nov 16 - Jehovah Rapha, My Healer (Exodus 15:26)
Nov 17 - Parakletos, My Helper (John 14:16)
No matter what we are going through, no matter how much trouble we are in, God is the strong tower we can run to for help. When we just can’t take another step, He is the safe place where we can take refuge and rest until we are strong again. No matter what trouble is following us, it can’t follow us into His presence.
Even Solomon, the wisest man to ever live, knew this about God. And that’s why we’re going to memorize Proverbs 18:10 this week.
In the dark moments, the scary moments, the hopeless moments, remember who God is. Remember His name. Hold on tight to who He says He is in your life, and trust that He is working on your behalf. Run to Him for safety and let Him take care of the details that are too much for you.
He is your strong tower, your strong fortress. You can trust Him to protect you when you can’t protect yourself. He wants you to run to Him for help. It’s not something to be ashamed of.
We all need help sometimes. Who better to give us the help we need than our Heavenly Father who knows us better than we know ourselves?
Love you all and praying for you!
Amy
