God's promises to His enemies
January 26 - February 1, 2025 | Always Peachy Devotionals | God's Promises Week 4
I like justice.
Don’t you? Isn’t there something powerful and confident and RIGHT that wells up in you when you see good triumph and evil cast down? Yes, mercy matters, and our justice is most like God’s when it is influenced by mercy. God is merciful, so we should be merciful.
But God has been merciful since He created humanity. God has extended mercy to all of Creation for our entire existence. And He didn’t have to. The day is coming when His justice will take the front seat. And on that day, it’s more important than anything else that we are ready to face Him.
On that day, when God declares His justice and righteousness over all of Creation, when He establishes His rule over all of existence, His enemies will not survive. That’s not how things work today. God’s enemies are still very much in power today, and it is only by His mercy that they remain. He is waiting, patiently, for the day when everything falls into place. We don’t know what He’s waiting for, but every day He tarries is another day of mercy for God’s enemies.
But that begs the question: Who is God’s enemy? How can God even have enemies?
Well, that’s what we’re going to talk about this last week of January 2025: God’s enemies and the promises He has made to them. Because, yes, God does have enemies. And His promises to them are just as trustworthy as the promises He has made to His friends.
Monday - To Unbelievers: You still have time (Romans 5:10)
Tuesday - To Demonic Forces: Your efforts are ultimately in vain (Isaiah 54:17)
Wednesday - To Satan: You’ve already lost (Genesis 3:15)
Thursday - To Sin: You’re finished (Colossians 2:13-14)
Friday - To Death: You’re dead (Revelation 1:17-18)
I’m excited about this week. Enormously. And I pray that it will be an encouragement to you in whatever season you are in right now.
God is so good, so merciful, so loving, and it’s really easy to lean into those qualities of His. They’re warm and fuzzy. But never forget that compassion has two sides. Yes, there is love, but love isn’t always warm and fuzzy; sometimes love is boundaries. Sometimes love is hard conversations. Sometimes love is standing your ground.
Never forget that God is the purest love to ever exist. His love is so true, so absolutely that no human can actually understand it. And in the moments when we question God’s love, we need to remember that Love begins with God. He is the source of real love, and His love is how we should define love in general.
Human understanding of Love is a pale shadow of the truth. God is love, absolutely, even in the moments where it doesn’t look or feel loving from a human definition.
Because of His love, He has made it possible to be saved. Because of His love, He has opened an impossible door for the lost. Because of His love, He has been patient when every culture since Noah has flipped Him off and cursed Him. God is the wronged party in this relationship. Don’t ever forget that. He is the One who has been defamed and persecuted and hated. Humanity are the ones who are in the wrong. Yet even though we have turned against Him over and over, He still gives us a way to be saved. He still offers us a way to escape an eternity of punishment and horror.
Make no mistake; He doesn’t have to. And as a reminder, I thought it might be a good idea to memorize a verse that helps us keep in mind what will happen to those who are against God. This week we will memorize Psalm 92:9.
Nothing gray about that, is there? Nothing uncertain. Nothing hesitant. This will happen. One day, this will come to pass. It’s not a threat; it’s a promise. And God keeps His promises.
It’s on us to make sure we are not aligning with God’s enemies. It is my responsibility to choose to follow Jesus, to obey God’s Word, to trust His promises, and to stay the course. And with His help, I can do it. So can you.
Praying for you this week, friends.
