I’m not good at turning over control. Ask anyone who has gone on a road trip with me. I usually drive. It’s not that I don’t trust the people I travel with. I just feel more at ease if I can be in control of the car (which is probably the same as not trusting them, right?).
But when I fly, my perspective is a bit different. I’m not quick to criticize a pilot, mostly because I don’t know how to fly a plane. I figure they know what they’re doing, and any input I offer may be more of a hindrance than a help.
Have you ever been in that scenario? Where you understand that your opinion may not have any bearing on the situation? Where you have to step back and let someone else take over because they know better than you do?
Hello. Welcome to a life of following Jesus.
Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
Isaiah 41:10
Some days I’m okay with God taking the wheel and leading me wherever He wants. But other days, it doesn’t work for me. I’d much rather be the one who’s calling the shots. I’d much rather be the one who determines my comfort level or who decides when I’ve grown enough and can finally succeed at this thing called life.
But the truth is that I don’t understand life. I don’t really know what I’m doing. I don’t know to make it work. So it’s a good idea to ask for help from the One Person who actually does understand.
God knows what He’s doing because He can see the end. He knows how all the pieces fit. He designed them. He can even find a place for the pieces of our lives that we’ve torn up and chewed up.
So we have nothing to fear, and even though life is hard, we don’t have to be discouraged. God is victorious, and He has promised to help us.
He doesn’t need our help, friends. He’s the one holding us up.
