Guatemala is a beautiful country, but I wouldn’t say that it’s safe. From a certain point of view, Guatemala is as dangerous as any other country. You just have to know what the pitfalls are.
The last time I was down there (which was FAR too long ago), I got the opportunity to go to a village that had never been visited before.
The only problem was getting there. Step one meant climbing into this scary, hollowed-out canoe and letting this village kid steer us across a raging river with a two-by-four.
Have I mentioned that I have the balance and coordination of a panda bear? Yeah. Scary canoe. Raging water. Bad balance. It was a recipe for a terrifying disaster.
