Don't forget your password!
God has given us special access to His eternal resources so that we can live an abundant life, but how often do we remember to use those resources?
Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house; I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe. Lead me in the right path, O Lord, or my enemies will conquer me. Make your way plain for me to follow. (Psalm 5:7-8)
How do you keep track of your passwords?
One of the greatest challenges to my digital life is the care and keeping of my list of passwords. I’m terrible about it because I can’t remember random numbers well, and a surefire way of preventing me from remembering something is to mix letters and numbers together in it. (Algebra was the bane of my existence.)
Passwords are so important, though. They are worth protecting because on the other side of a password-protected firewall is safety. You don’t just let anyone into your safe place. It has to be someone you trust, someone you know won’t take advantage of your information and your data.
As I was reading this passage this morning in my One Year Bible Reading Plan, it made me think about passwords. God has given us access to His presence, His house, His safety because of His unfailing love. The phrase unfailing love is one of my favorite Hebrew words: hesed. This is steadfast love, covenant love, love that nobody can deserve that God offers us freely because of who He is.
So how often do we lean into this gift He has given us? How often do we use the tools and resources God has offered to us? He has made it possible for us to be safe, to experience the best of life in the protection of His presence, but many times we choose to tackle the struggles and challenges of life in our own strength. Maybe it’s time that we stop.
It’s okay if you don’t know what to do next. It’s okay if you don’t know what direction you’re supposed to travel. It’s okay if you aren’t sure what choice you should make. None of us know. None of us are smart enough or prepared enough or wise enough to do life on our own. We need help, and because of His great love, God has provided help for us.
We just have to use the password.
God has given us access to His house. We can approach Him directly (Hebrews 4:16) because Jesus is our One mediator between us and the Father (1 Timothy 2:5). Come to the Lord in Jesus’ name and ask Him for help. Ask Him to show you which way to go. Ask Him to keep it simple enough for you to understand (that’s what I have to do).
May each of us seek the Lord’s direction in every area of our lives today and for the rest of the year.
Questions for Reflection
When was the last time you didn’t know what choice to make?
Since God has provided a way for you to access the resources He set aside for you to live your life to the fullest, how does that change your process for making decisions?
What has prevented you from asking God for help in the past?
